about Mu Eta Chapter

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. shed LIGHT on Arizona State University's campus on April 26, 1976, becoming the 448th chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Eta was founded by Brother Gerald Richard II, also known as "Big Brother Gusto". Gerald Richard II was made August 20, 1974 on the campus of the University of Arizona, Zeta Theta chapter. From there he went on to Arizona State University to create the Mu Eta chapter. The first three charter lines were Genesis, Destiny, and One through Eternity. Since its establishment in 1976, Mu Eta chapter continues to uphold the aims of the Fraternity: Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind.

Mu Eta Chapter has continued to remain the leading organization on the campus of Arizona State University since its founding, even gaining national recognition in 2002 when unofficially awarded College Chapter of the Year. In more recent years, Mu Eta has proven to the Phoenix and Arizona State University communities that Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the one and only Fraternity truly dedicated to leadership and improving the lives of all that feel the warmth of its light. In the 2008-2009 academic years Mu Eta Chapter was recognized by Arizona State University with the following awards:

becoming a Brother

Alpha Phi Alpha recognizes two types of membership, College and Alumni. An aspirant (anyone seeking membership into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.) may apply for membership into a College Chapter as an undergraduate student in good standing at a fully accredited four year college or university. College Aspirants can only join the Fraternity at a College or University where an active chapter is present. Aspirants may apply for membership into an Alumni Chapter as a graduate who has earned a degree from a fully accredited four year college of university. Alumni Aspirants are encouraged to join chapters that are within a 60 mile radius of their permanent place of residence. All aspirants (College and Alumni) must complete the same requirements to become members of the Fraternity.

Below are the basic criteria that must be met in order for anyone to become a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This list is greatly simplified so be sure to visit the membership area of the corporate website for full disclosures, requirements, and fees.

  • Minimum GPA of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale
  • Active within the ASU and/or local community
  • A visible on campus leader
  • An individual of substance
  • Knowledgeable of Alpha Phi Alpha and its history
